Those of you kicking yourselves for never having experienced New Orleans Mardi Gras when New Orleans was New Orleans, all of you who daydream about attending Carnival in Rio but haven't figured out travel details, this invitation is for you. It's for you as well as those of you who keep your superhero costumes cleaned and ready for action, those of you who have sweated to Samba at Ipanema and who were regulars on Royal and Bourbon. |
The party is CoMix, pronounced "comics."
The place is Kingman Studios
The date and time are Satururday, April 21st starting at 10PM
The music will feature Touareg, the middle-eastern jazz-funk band that has rocked my studio in the past, and we'll have DJ Jaive during breaks and wrapping up with a late night set of delicious house inspired tunes.
Here's what CoMix is: It's a costume party with a comic/cartoon theme. I will have two or three small stages, similar to the Pin-Up party (http://kingman.smugmug.com/Parties). I will also have some photographers and videographers wandering around. The idea is that we create our own entertainment by exercising our own fantasies. Choose an unlikely looking partner at CoMix or come with one that is a perfect fit. I'll have dry erase thought bubbles and dialogue balloons. You create the scene and text. We'll photograph your antics and put the stories we create up on a web page. And we'll have a contest for the most creative intpretation of the concept. $100 credit at La Belle Vie for first place or a year of free admission to any events at Kingman Studios for you and a friend.
When I told Mario Salvi from Buenos Aires about CoMix, he replied that for him, "putting on a mask is like taking one off." That's really what this evening is about. Taking off the mask of our social veneers, laughing at our silly sides.
I'll also have a bunch of other entertainers around clowning, juggling, dancing, drumming. Arielist Risa Cohen will dangle over your heads. Wonder woman will be there. And I'm hoping to hear back from master mask maker Brently Davis.
Costumes are not mandatory, but encouraged. And you'll be rewarded for wearing one. Admission is $15, with a costume it's $10. After 11:30 you'll pay 5 extra bucks. And you'll have to sign in at the door again granting me permission to use your photo likeness.
I'm not saying when we'll end, but I will serve cinnamon rolls, orange juice and coffee.
An armed, uniformed off-duty police officer will provide security in his squad car at the entrance.

Kissing Booth
You are invited to my version of a Valentine's party, Kissing Booth,
Saturday, February 17th, at 10 PM
@ Kingman Studios
1901 Grand St. NE in Minneapolis.
For Kissing Booth, I have made a small theater in which I offer you the chance to feature yourselves as part of the entertainment. The "stage" is just two feet long and one and a half feet high. We're going to have a contest to see who can produce the most compelling entertainment in that space. The contestants will be as anonymous as they like. The entrance to the Kissing Booth is separate from the stage/window.
Rules:
All guests will be considered potential contestants and therefor must sign a photo release upon entering Kingman Studios. Kissing Booth contestants may have still or video images taken. I no cases will more than 60 seconds of video be shot from which no more than 10 seconds will be edited by Kingman for display on http://www.kingman.smugmug.com. This site has an automatic mechanism that allows the number of hits a particular image or movie gets to determine its popularity. The final decision of winners is nonetheless, that of the artist--moi! Winners will receive: for first place$150 or a $250 gift card for dinner at La Belle Vie, second $75 or a $100 gift card at La Belle Vie.
Is there a dress code? No, but Inappropriate attire is suggested. Wild hair and make up make theater more fun, right? You can act with anyone who accepts your invitation. So I suggest you look inviting.
Other entertainment will include tunes spun by DJ Reggie McKeever and some dancing by dancers in racy outfits. Ashley will be at the door. That's a show in itself. $10 at the door.
An armed, uniformed, off-duty police officer will provide security at the gate.

Space Gypsies |
Saturday, October 28th
Fire your retro rockets and prepare to land at the most out-of-this-world party on the planet, Space Gypsies, @ Kingman Studios. I'll be featuring two bands, The New Primitives and Savage Aural Hotbed and a late night set of deep house by DJ Vision. The Driftless Tribe dancers will be belly dancing. Tim O'Keefe will be leading a group of hand drummers. Around midnight Risa will be droping in from the ceiling on her silks and Nicole & Co. will be spinning fire outside. At 1 AM I'll announce the winner of the $100 first place and $50 second and $25 third place winners of the costume contest.
You will be photographed. Your presence at Space Gypsies requires that you give me your consent to use your photo likeness. If all the tech stuff goes as planned, your face, or whatever you show the camera will be projected for the benefit of all space gypsies. Everyone who comes to Space Gypsies will sign a photo waiver at the door. And speaking of the door...
Way more people want to come to this party than can fit in my studio, even with the new addition, my plastic-wrapped porch. So, I've made some changes: To guarantee that you get in you need to email me that you're coming. You will get in if your name is on a list. With your name on the list, you'll pay $10. If you have not RSVP'd you'll pay $15. If you're not in a costume, no matter if you're on a list or not, you will have to fork over $25.
A uniformed police officer in his squad car will serve as security.

Chill 7

The Gold Standard
|
Friday, November 17th
Rhythm @ Kingman Studios
starts at 9 PM
Two of the hottest funk/jazz/rock bands on the scene, Chill 7 www.chill7.com and The Gold Standard www.goldstandardband.com , team up for a night of funk in one of the most hip underground scenes in the Twin Cities, Kingman Studios.
Gold Standard is coming off a huge summer where they released their first album, rocked the 10,000 Lakes Festival, and packed the Cabooze.
Chill 7 has just finished releasing a critically acclaimed album to a packed house at the Dakota and a slew of radio and TV appearances.
Add the artistic flair of Brant Kingman and the result is an explosion of funk, art, and dance. Includes dancers grooving on the platforms and the aerial acrobatics of Risa Cohen. The party is also being filmed for video.
Open to everyone, $5 at the door. This is more than a gig, it's an experience unlike anything you've ever seen! |
